Bishop Matthew Visits St. Andrew’s Cathedral in Philadelphia »

On May 16, 2026, continuing his archpastoral visit to the city of Philadelphia, Bishop Matthew of Sourozh, Interim Administrator of the Patriarchal Parishes in the USA and Canada, visited St. Andrew Cathedral.

Parish rector, Archpriest Mark Shinn, and parish cleric, Priest Alexander Tsygankov, shared with the archpastor the glorious history and contemporary life of Philadelphia’s first Orthodox church.

His Grace venerated the cathedral’s holy relics and visited the parish museum, which houses—among other treasures—the original iconostasis and liturgical vessels from the ship’s chapel of the renowned battleship “Retvizan”. This vessel was built in the shipyards of Philadelphia and consecrated by the revered American missionary and hieromartyr, Archpriest Alexander Hotovitsky.

Bishop Matthew expressed his profound gratitude to Father Mark, the clergy, and the parish committee for their diligent preservation of the parish’s history, as well as for fostering an active and multifaceted parish life. The archpastor warmly wished the rector and his assistants God’s help in their labors.
